Contemporary Condo Makeover
While the unit in this high-rise condo was fairly new, the space was not as contemporary, and did not provide as much storage and efficiency as the client needed for their life style. The kitchen remodel was part of a complete makeover of their entire unit. In addition to more storage that was easily accessible, and a very light and open feeling kitchen that was on the modern side, the client specifically requested more countertop space and a table-height eating area that could accommodate two diners for daily use, with the option to expand to four diners. The kitchen was completely redesigned to make use of every square inch without creating a crowded feel: Replacing the existing awkward island with a peninsula allowed for expansive countertop space to be added, along with a myriad of storage, which included the requested concealed, pull-out trash receptacle near the sink. The free-standing range was replaced by a built-in double oven with divided tray storage above, while an integrated refrigerator helped to achieve the contemporary feel the client was looking for. A pull-out pantry that only requires a width of twelve inches was the perfect solution for complete access to dry goods in a small space. Other practical solutions were implemented in the previously unusable corner by equipping it with an aluminum tambour appliance garage above the counter. In order to create a little bit of privacy in the sink area, a raised section of countertop was designed, incorporating a lighted niche with a frosted glass sliding door—the perfect niche for sponges and regularly needed sink items. This is also used as the subtle night light in the kitchen. The highlight of the kitchen for the client is the retractable eating table that easily transforms from seating for two to seating for four in an instant, without the need for a formal dining table.
